Scope
My university had a student design challenge and I collaborated with a group of 3 class mates to design a prototype for a sustainable container. Our group narrowed our options down and we decided to create a new pizza insert for the pizza Boxes at the college local pizza shop "Blaze Pizza".
Solution
We created a pizza insert that is biodegradable and grease-resistant. This addition would fit into the original size pizza boxes from the colleges' local pizza shop. The material that the insert would be made out of is called "Bagasse", which is formed from sugarcane pulp. This was selected because it decomposes in about 3 months and the original pizza box could be properly recycled, grease-free. This makes our design desirable, feasible and viable.
Results/Learnings
Based on our research, we learned that there is too much paper waste that is generated by grease-soaked pizza boxes. Some of the methods we worked with were Crazy 8s, Journey Mapping, Bundling Ideas, Creating Frameworks, How Might We Statements, Inward/ Outward Paths and designing a digital and physical prototype. Our group also won 1st place in the challenge.
